In his drunken state/and undermined by fate
he tried to picture/Sheila on the ceiling
It was in his hand/but he couldn't take command
of his gland/and so he lost all feeling
By half-past twelve/he was beside himself
having failed to conjure up/his sweet senora
And, in his suffering/turned to the only living thing
within reach/and thus began his many affairs with flora
The Ficus got it first/then died of thirst
the Aloe soothed his burning/for awhile
and the Spanish Bayonet/helped him to forget
that he couldn't remember/Sheila's comely smile
His dreams took on strange shapes
like clusters of grapes
begging to be plucked from climbing tendrils
'til finally he hit bottom
with the Apple of Sodom
and was borne away by Moses-in-the-Cradle
What he and they left/to this world-a-falling-down
was a being/and a notion to go on healing
and the child they bore/will be known forever more
as Sheila-on-the-Ceiling....
